“They won the Champions League in 2005 and fans are still talking about it!” – says Wayne Rooney as reported by Man U tickets.
With Liverpool having waited a total of 29 years for a league title, Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney doesn’t seem too keen on favoring the side to win yet another title, ending their premiership title drought.
The boyhood Everton fan who started off playing for the Toffees (Everton United) as well as Manchester United revealed that the reds may continue to rant about the win for the coming decades. Worrying for his ears as he may have to bear the news for the next 15 years, the former Manchester United player revealed that he would rather favor Manchester United to lift the title.
With Liverpool and Manchester United struggling to emerge top, the former seeking to redeem itself after an extended drought since 1990 and the latter seeking to win the title back-to-back, it is unclear who might go ahead to lift the title.
Rooney, the former Manchester United player now wearing the Major League Soccer (U.S) side DC United’s jersey, in a recent interview joked: “It’s a great reason to be out the country when those two are going head to head for the title.”
Continued Man United and Liverpool Rivalry
While acknowledging the prowess of both teams, Manchester United and Liverpool FC, revealing that the two teams re the best in the country at the moment, the 33-year-old clearly revealed his preference for one over the other, and it’s no one but the blue side of Manchester.
Speaking on Drivetime Show, the former United Player said: ““I hope Man U get over the line before Liverpool.”
He further added during the show; “I couldn’t bear to see them win it, it would be a nightmare for any Evertonian.
“I remember in 2005 they won the Champions League and they’re still talking about it now so it would be another 10 or 15 years of that!”
Current league table standing however favor Liverpool as it is currently leading Manchester United by two points with the Pep Guardiola’s team having a match in hand which could be its chance to go ahead of Liverpool.
With Liverpool scheduled to host Tottenham at Anfield for their next fixture and Manchester United paying a visit to Fulham, it remains unknown who will emerge top following the fixtures.
Changing the subject slightly and speaking about Man City and England flyer, Raheem Sterling who seems to have been getting much criticism in the press although having scored 15 Premier League goals this season with nine chances created to his name, Rooney acknowledged the influence of the City manager, Pep Guardiola in shaping the England player.
“Raheem has always had the talent and the ability but the one thing he has improved on massively is his knowledge of the game and tactically he is a lot better since working with Pep Guardiola.
“He is doing fantastic so I am really pleased for him,” added Rooney after describing the abuse suffered by the 24-year-old in the past as ‘baffling’.
“He will be up for Player of the Year for sure this season, he is doing fantastic.”
